Memorial Day 2015

Today is a day of remembrance. A day to honor those that made the ultimate sacrifice, falling in the line of duty. Memorial Day is mainly about soldiers, but I would include police officers, fire personnel, first responders of all types who risked and ultimately lost their lives.

Even if you weren’t directly affected by the loss of a loved one, I’m sure you know someone who has. I would urge everyone to take a moment today and think about those who have passed, be it fighting a war (even if you don’t agree/support said war) for the causes they believed in (even if you don‘t particularly share that belief), or as a first responder to an attack, natural disaster, or other tragedy.

People are out there right now, in other states, other countries, ready to lay down their lives for people they don’t even know. People out there already have laid down their lives for people they don’t even know. It’s that strength, courage, and honor that we should acknowledge today, that we should strive to emulate, even a fraction, in ourselves every day.

Stand up for what you believe in, but don’t trample the beliefs of others. Hold onto your values, but don’t diminish the values others hold. Remain true to yourself and encourage others to do the same. And remember, in spite of whatever differences we have, we’re all human and we’re all in this together.

Until next time…

Memorial Day

Contrary to what many think, today isn’t about hitting special sales at your favorite stores, having cookouts, or getting an extra day off from school or work.

Today is about remembering the men and women who have served or are serving our country and especially those who died in the course of protecting us and our freedom.

It’s ok to partake in a sale, a cookout, and to enjoy that extra day off, but I’d challenge you to, at some point during that merry making, take just a moment to stop and think about our acting military, our veterans, and all the fallen heroes, both sung and unsung.  Stop and take a moment to appreciate what these people have done, the sacrifices some have made, and what those on active duty are still doing today while you‘re having fun at that sale or at that cookout.  After all, those sales, those cookouts, and those days off probably wouldn’t be happening without them.

Thank you to all the men and women who have served, are serving, or have made the ultimate sacrifice in order to ensure that we, and our country remains free.

Until next time…
