Beauty In The Mundane

Have you ever stopped and stared at a common object, or common occurrence in nature, suddenly seeing it in a new and different way?  Maybe you’ve been walking along with someone when this happens and they look at you as if you’ve lost your marbles.  Yeah, I know what that’s like!

Photographers and artists tend to see things around them just a little differently than the average, not so creatively inclined individual.  They call this “seeing beauty in the mundane.”  Just who “they” are, I couldn’t say, but you know what I mean.

Take this photo for example

Most people walking along the beach wouldn’t give this a second look, but there was something about it that caught my eye.  I tend to look for patterns and images like this when I’m at the beach.  I know it seems odd that I’m talking about the beach in early March, but living only a few miles away from the ocean, I’m a year round beach goer.

Obviously, this is just a small example of finding beauty in the mundane.  Everything has it’s own individual beauty, just like people.  Trust me, beauty is all around you, some of it obvious, some of it you just have to look for.

Until next time…

What Do You Want To Photograph?

“What is the one thing, place, or person you’d most like to photograph?”

This is one question photographers get asked constantly.  The answer, however, can change each time the question is asked.  There could be more than one answer at one time, one goal may be attained, interests may change, etc.  And the great thing about this question is, there’s no wrong answer.  I love questions like that!

I can’t limit myself to just one thing, place, or person I’d really like to photograph.  There are several things, places, and people on my list.  It’s a long list and I know I may never attain some of the photographs I wish to take but like they say, it’s not the destination that matters, it’s the journey.

What about you?  What are some things, places, and people you want to photograph?

Until next time…

It’s February!

That’s right, folks.  It’s the first Monday in the month of February.

Why is that significant?  Well, Valentine’s Day (it irks me when I hear people say “Valentime’s“) is quickly approaching.  It’s next Tuesday in fact (just a reminder for everyone).

Now, personally, I’m not a big fan of the holiday (maybe because I despise the color pink and I don‘t really care for the chocolates that come in that famous heart-shaped box) but a lot of people get into the spirit by grabbing up mushy cards, flowers, and boxes of chocolates.

Guys (and you girls too), those types of gifts may have worked when you were five and you wanted to get something for your mom, but they’re so overdone now that they’ve actually become quite boring.  How many people enjoy getting that same box of chocolates every year?

When I see the hordes of cards, cheesy stuffed animals, and candy I think…Last minute.  If the saying is true and it really is the thought that counts well then, shouldn’t the gift reflect the thought?  So, take a moment and put some serious thought and a little effort into your gifts.  Trust me, it will be appreciated ten times more.

Here’s an idea for you, get a two sided frame or a single frame with a mat that has space for two 5×7 prints.  In one side, give your significant other a portrait of yourself.  In the other, write a little message, love note, or poem.  My brother and I collaborated and actually did this for our mother one year for Mother’s Day and guess what?  She cried.  Score!  You know you’ve hit the mark when she (or even he!) cries in a good way!

And just to be more generous (like sharing the idea wasn‘t enough! [-_^]), I won’t even ask to be given credit if you happen to use this little idea of mine!  Though, if you do try it, or some variation of it, it would rock if you sent me an email or left a message on my Facebook page (www.facebook.com/AudreyMayPhoto) to let me how it worked out for you!

Until next time…

How To Piss Off A Photographer

Forgive my lack of updates, folks.  Life has a way of spiraling out of control now and then.

But, I’ve returned.  New year means time for new posts.

Recently, I was browsing articles on the PhotoShelter blog and I came across a post about the “Top Ten Ways To Piss Off A Photographer” (you can find said article here).

This got me thinking.  As a photographer, what could someone do to piss me off?

Well, the ten reasons listed in the PhotoShelter article are a good place to start.  But I think the four main things that would piss me off as a professional photographer would be the following:

1. Theft of my images.

It takes a lot of time and effort to create images I find excellent (especially since I’m my own worst critic in all things).  So when someone takes an image (or any other piece of work) I toiled hard to create and tries to use it or take credit for it, I’m not a happy camper.

2. Expect to use my service/images for free.

Photographers have bills just like everyone else.  Our photography is how we bring home the bread.  When someone thinks my work is good enough to make use of but not good enough to warrant payment, it doesn’t sit well with me.  Some photographers may find it in their hearts to do a few instances of pro bono work here and there, but when it comes down to it, no one works for free.  Photographers are no different.  And as the article mentions, offering a photographer a photo credit as payment doesn’t fly.  It’s a little insulting really.
Likewise, I find it insulting when someone wants portraits or some other photographic service from me but doesn’t feel as though they should have to pay anything for not only the prints, but the work I did in taking the photographs and making the prints (I do all my own custom printing, folks, and that‘s a lot of work).

3. Making alterations to my images without consent.

Nothing stings more than getting stoked about having an image published only to find that it’s been so completely warped by alterations and “edits” that it‘s not even the same image anymore.  Well, ok, having images stolen may sting a lot more but you get my drift.
Photographers work hard to create high-quality images.  We are attached to our work because we pour our heart and soul into it.  It is a piece of us, an extension of who we are, so to have someone alter an image without prior consent because they think it will “work better that way” is a complete insult.

4. Stereotyping

I’ve read countless posts, articles, and stories about photographers being accosted while exercising their legal right to photograph.  In this day and age, where terrorism is a real fear, someone in a public place, dressed all in black (as most artists and photographers I know do), with a camera in front of their face taking pictures is automatically looked at like a threat.  We as a society are so over-saturated by reports and images of “suspicious activity” that an innocent photographer who just wanted to take an artistic photograph of this street corner or the front steps of that building, ends up being branded anything from a nuisance to an all out terrorist.  I’m all for safety and security but that kind of stereotyping is completely ignorant and it really annoys me.

So, what do you think?  What pisses you off as a photographer?  Or, even if you aren’t a photographer, what could someone do to you in your respective field to piss you off?

Until next time…

Time to Adapt

I know it’s been a while folks and I apologize.  But as the saying goes, when it rains, it pours.

Photography, typing, and writing just became a bit challenging for me.  Let me explain why.

Recently my mother and I took a trip into Canada.  Campobello Island to be exact.  We decided to go for a winter hike (we should have brought our snowshoes!).  After our hike, in the process of packing up the car to head home, I somehow managed to mangle my right index finger.  Now for those of you that were unaware of this, I’m right-handed.  Also, almost every camera out there is made right-handed.  So not only is it difficult for me to type and write, it’s awkward for me to take photographs without the use of my index finger.  But like every photographer, and everyone who’s ever suffered a minor injury, I’ll adapt.

It’s strange though.  You never realize how much you rely on your dominant hand until you’re denied the use of it, or a portion of it, due to an injury.  But I guess it’s like that with any extremity.

So as my injury slowly heals, I’m doing my best to make due and forge on in my daily activities.

As a treat, I figured I’d post a few photos for everyone.  Maybe if I can make a few people smile, it’ll help me feel a bit better!  There’s three new photographs for your viewing pleasure. They are: Lonely Bench, Icicle on a Pine, and Winter at Green Point.  Enjoy.

Until next time folks,

Keep on rockin’ on.
