Kids, Can You Say “Unicorn”!?

A while ago, I took a walk on the beach (I love living so close to the ocean!) and found something awesome.

I happened to look down at just the right moment and found a piece of driftwood among a group of rocks.  The piece of driftwood looked like the head of a unicorn!

That’s right, kids!  I found a freakin’ driftwood unicorn and I just had to bring it home!!

Behold!

Keep your eyes open, folks.  You can find awesome things when you least expect it!

Until next time…

Lunar Eclipse

So, last week on Monday night/Tuesday morning a total lunar eclipse happened.  It was a Blood Moon.  What’s a “Blood Moon” you ask?  Don’t worry, it’s nothing bad, it’s nothing out of a horror movie, it’s just called that because of the way the light reflects off the moon, giving it a red hue.

I’m sure people have heard about it, saw articles online, maybe even went outside and watched, but I figured I’d show my readers a few of the shots I took.

Now, I wasn’t able to capture the red hue to the moon, and, sadly I wasn’t able to capture the entire eclipse.  About halfway to the peak of the eclipse, the clouds rolled in and obscured everything.  Unfortunately for me, that’s what typically happens in my neck of the woods when there’s some kind of celestial event going on.  I’ve missed every meteor shower that’s happened since I’ve been alive (no joke), I’ve missed numerous lunar eclipses, I’ve missed comets, I’ve never seen a falling star (again, no joke), and every time the aurora borealis is supposed to be visible, the sky is swallowed up by clouds.  But, I’ll count my blessings and be thankful I was able to witness this much.

Rorschach Test

Everyone’s seen the famous “ink blot” or Rorschach tests before.   The same principle behind them applies to the age-old past time of lying on the grass and looking at the clouds.  Matrixing.  It’s when the brain tries to make sense of random patterns in both visual and audio stimuli.  So when you see that bunny or dragon in the clouds, your brain is matrixing.  When you hear music or a voice in the white noise of the TV or static of the radio, no it’s not the little girl from The Ring coming to get you, your brain is matrixing.

A while ago, as I went to check my mail, I caught a glimpse of an odd little formation on top of a snow bank in my yard.  Time for a little Rorschach test for everyone.

What do you see?

What Do You See?

The brain is neat, huh?

Finally, Some Snowshoeing!

Those of you who have been following my blog for a while might remember me mentioning something about snowshoeing back in…wow…2009.  It’s kind of hard to believe it’s been that long.  But, it has.  Over the past few years, there hasn’t been enough snow in my portion of Maine to make snowshoeing worth while (it’s actually difficult to snowshoe when there isn’t enough snow).  But recently, there was quite a bit of snow on the trails I tend to frequent.  And finally, I got to use my snowshoes for the third time since I bought them back in ‘08!

I went to one of my trusted standby trails, the Petit Manan Wildlife Refuge.  It’s a four mile round trip trail (and surprisingly I’m not in agony from the trek like I was the first time I ever tried my snowshoes on that trail).  It was nice and sunny when I started out, but not even a quarter of the way into the trail, it started snowing like a son of a *insert expletive here*….  But, I trudged on hoping the flurried wouldn’t turn into a squall (Eskimos aren‘t the only ones with several words for snow!).

Like usual, I had my camera with me and took some shots along my trek.  Here’s one of the better shots for everyone to enjoy.

State Shaped Rock

A while ago, I wrote a post about photographing things in nature that resembled letters (remember the seashell shaped like the letter “B”?).  It’s rather addicting and I nearly made it through the entire alphabet before other projects diverted my attention.

Every once in a while, I like to go back to the idea of looking for things in nature that resemble other shapes.  Recently, I was on the lookout for something that was shaped like my home state, Maine.

And here it is…

Maine Shaped rockSta

I would recommend trying this sometime.  It can be done with your state or even country.  I’d be interested to see other people’s results.

Until next time…
