Nature’s Humor

As a photographer, it’s always important to develop your creative eye.  To look for the things in your environment that other people don’t notice.  To be on the lookout for new and interesting subjects to photograph.  Sometimes nature can help you out.  With a little humor to boot.

For example, last week, I took a trip to the beach near my house and I came across a rock with an unusual pattern that had seaweed clinging to one side of it.  I’ll admit, I giggled before I took this shot.  This isn’t the first time I’ve seen a face in a pattern in nature, but I think this is one of the more silly ones I’ve come across!

Keep an eye out for Mother Nature’s little spurts of humor!

Photo Remake

Every once in a while, I like to take a look through my photo archive and see how far I’ve come from where I began my journey in photography.  Sometimes I even like to try my hand at a “Photo Remake”.  In other words, I like to see if I can recreate certain shots and see how close I can get to the original image while still keeping things fresh.  I know that sounds a bit complicated and even a bit like an oxymoron, but it’s interesting to try.

About five years ago, I was walking along the beach and took a photograph of a flower growing on the edge of one of the small boardwalks that lead from the road to the beach.  Some of you who have been following me for a while might recognize this image.

I hadn’t planned to attempt a “Photo Remake” of this shot when I embarked on my most recent beach trip, but I kind of stumbled upon the opportunity.  Here’s the result.

Boardwalk Flower Revisited

Attempting to recreate an old photograph in a new light can have interesting results.  Sometimes the result is better than the original, and other times the result is a miserable failure.  Either way, it’s a good way to keep learning.

A Day At The Beach

I can’t recall if I’ve ever met someone that didn’t like spending a day at the beach.  The sun, the sand, the surf, and the over-all tranquility.  Awesome.

When I go to the beach to take pictures, like when I hike, I tend to focus more on nature and the wildlife traipsing about instead of any people that may be around me.  Let’s face it, the people at the beach are pretty much always doing the same things.  Kids are running around screaming, drawing/playing in the sand, building sandcastles, and swimming while their parents look on from beach chairs or blankets.  All those activities can make for some nice photographs, but they tend to get old really quick.  At least for me.  I like to focus more on the things most people simply pass by, like patterns left in the sand by the receding tide, rocks that are in natural but unusual formations, and feathers left behind by sea gulls.

Recently, the weather cooperated long enough for me to take a trip to the beach (I love living less than five miles from the ocean!).  I managed to bring home some, in my opinion, decent photographs.  I’d like to share just a few of those with you folks.  Hey, I did promise you last week that I would include two or three images this week!

Rainbows And Unicorns

Ok, so this post doesn’t have any unicorns but there are rainbows! A double rainbow at that! I just threw in the unicorn thing to get you folks to read this. Looks like it worked!

So, unfortunately, I’m still stuck in my house (what month are we in now?) and I’m getting bored with my surroundings. But, nature came to my rescue yesterday. Sort of. It rained, which I wasn’t all that thrilled about because I didn’t want a repeat of the water park fiasco in my basement, but the sun decided to show its face briefly during this little shower. And what happens when sun and rain mix, kids? If you said “Rainbows!” you get a gold star!

I glanced out my kitchen window and saw a pretty vibrant rainbow forming. When I got outside after grabbing my camera, I was greeted with not one, but two rainbows. The second is a little harder to see, but it’s there.

Double Rainbow

So, thanks, Nature. This almost makes up for you flooding my basement last week. Almost.

Thanks A Lot, Rain

I’m one of those odd people who likes the rain.  I like the sound of it.  I like watching it.  I even don’t mind being out in it when it’s a warm day.

What I don’t like, is when it rains so hard the ground becomes so over-saturated and water ends up finding it’s way into my basement.  I hate that.  And that’s exactly what happened this past Friday.  So, needless to say, I spent this past weekend on clean-up duty.  I was able to employ my photography skills, but not in the awesome creative way I would have liked.  I’m not sure if that can be counted in the “on the bright side” column or in the “major disappointment” column.  Maybe somewhere between the two.  Sort of a “the glass is half empty AND half full” kind of thing.

But, on the bright side, and getting away from the awful mess I had to deal with in my basement this weekend (lucky for me, I had the brains to make sure everything of value was either in plastic totes or up on cinder blocks before this happened), I caved.  What did I cave on and why is that a good thing?  Well, I’ll tell you.  On the second of this month, I caved and adopted the cat I told you, my fine readers, about in my Tiger In The Grass post.  Ironically, it was raining that day too.  She showed up on my porch, soaking wet, meowing, and scratching at my door.  I didn’t have the heart to turn her away, so I brought her in, fed her a hearty portion of cat food, gave her the proper de-flea/de-worm medications, and got her a check up with the vet.  I gave her the name Abby (in honor of my favorite NCIS character [^_^]).  So, now my little cat army…er…family is back up to four members.  Here’s to hoping everyone gets along!

Until next time…
