Rain Covered Spider Web

This summer was pretty rough in the way of precipitation.  We received very little.  I wouldn’t call it a full on drought, but it was bad enough that pretty much all of the little streams and rivers I come across while hiking were bone dry.  Even on a recent hike after we’d received a day of rain and the forest was damp with rain drops still clinging to the leaves and pine needles, the streams were still dry.  Hopefully that will change soon.

On my most recent hike, I decided to try a few artsy shots of the raindrops in the trees and on the flowers and grass.  I took a few shots and was kind of satisfied with them when I came across a rain covered spider web in a pine tree.  The raindrops on the delicate strands of spider silk look like little pearls.

Later on down the trail I caught a picture of two squirrels.  At the time I thought they were just chasing each other, playing, but in reviewing my photos, I noticed they weren’t playing.  They were getting frisky.  I won’t be posting the photo as I’m not a peddler of wildlife porn, I only mention it because it was hilarious.  Here I think I’m catching a shot of two animals playing when in reality they’re getting it on.

Until next time…

Camping Adventure

In addition to hiking I’m also a big fan of camping.  I went camping for the second time this year a week or so ago (I usually wait until fall when it’s a bit cooler with less bugs).

Before embarking on my camping adventure, I made sure I had everything ready.  I decided to set up the single-person pop-up tent I bought years ago (but never used until now), in my living room before committing to using it on my trip.  I wanted to see if my air mattress would fit in the tent or if I’d have to make other arrangements (I.e. sleep on the ground).  Luckily the mattress fit.

I left the room for a moment and came back to this…

Cat Stole My Tent!

I think either she wanted to go with me, didn’t want me to go at all, or just liked the set-up.  I’m betting it was a combo of the last two.

Anyway, I got to the campground and got settled in my campsite, and what should happen?  It started raining.  Luckily my campsite had an arbor over the picnic table so I was able to wait out the rain without having to retreat to the car.

Once the rain let up, there was a layer of fog surrounding an island out in the bay.  This was the view from my campsite.

Thanks A Lot, Rain

I’m one of those odd people who likes the rain.  I like the sound of it.  I like watching it.  I even don’t mind being out in it when it’s a warm day.

What I don’t like, is when it rains so hard the ground becomes so over-saturated and water ends up finding it’s way into my basement.  I hate that.  And that’s exactly what happened this past Friday.  So, needless to say, I spent this past weekend on clean-up duty.  I was able to employ my photography skills, but not in the awesome creative way I would have liked.  I’m not sure if that can be counted in the “on the bright side” column or in the “major disappointment” column.  Maybe somewhere between the two.  Sort of a “the glass is half empty AND half full” kind of thing.

But, on the bright side, and getting away from the awful mess I had to deal with in my basement this weekend (lucky for me, I had the brains to make sure everything of value was either in plastic totes or up on cinder blocks before this happened), I caved.  What did I cave on and why is that a good thing?  Well, I’ll tell you.  On the second of this month, I caved and adopted the cat I told you, my fine readers, about in my Tiger In The Grass post.  Ironically, it was raining that day too.  She showed up on my porch, soaking wet, meowing, and scratching at my door.  I didn’t have the heart to turn her away, so I brought her in, fed her a hearty portion of cat food, gave her the proper de-flea/de-worm medications, and got her a check up with the vet.  I gave her the name Abby (in honor of my favorite NCIS character [^_^]).  So, now my little cat army…er…family is back up to four members.  Here’s to hoping everyone gets along!

Until next time…
