Going Stir-Crazy

Most of my readers know by now that one of my favorite things to do during the summer is to go hiking.  Sadly, for reasons beyond my control, I haven’t been able to do that for the past two months.  I haven’t even been able to leave my house for the past month and I’ve been going stir-crazy wanting to get outside.

Finally, yesterday, I was able to get outside before my head exploded.  I finally went hiking.  Where?  Where else!?  My favorite hiking spot, Quoddy Head State Park in Lubec, Maine.

Not only are the trails at Quoddy beautiful, but there are several points and overlooks that shouldn’t be missed.  Green Point is one of them.  Every time I get to Green Point I’m met by new an unique rock cairns.  Now, these shouldn’t be confused with cairns that mark a trail.  The cairns at Green Point serve no other purpose than to be interesting for others to see.  Art.  I, myself, have built a few in the times I’ve visited Quoddy.

Sometimes, I’m amazed by the complexity of the cairns I find at Green Point.  Whoever built this one must have taken their time.

So, next time you’re out hiking, don’t just stop and smell the roses, stop and take a minute to appreciate any cairns you find, whether they’re for show or function.

Until next time…

Stuck In A Funk

I’ve been pretty slack in my artistic photography lately, mainly due to all the rain we had recently (and I hear talk of more on the way [>_<]) and a family issue.  But, like all artists in their artistic endeavors, sometimes photographers get into a funk when inspiration decides to take a vacation…without even sending a postcard.  Thanks for that, muse.  I guess I’ve fallen into that funk recently.  It’s a funk I know well.  A funk I don’t care for.  Though I do like the word “funk”.

I noticed that no one seemed interested in my little challenge last week so I won’t drive down that avenue again any time soon.  But that failed experiment won’t stop me from creating in Photoshop and sharing the results I like with folks (trust me, for every piece I share, there are ten or twenty more that never get to see the light of day).

Sadly, I have nothing new or awesome to share with you this week, my fine readers, and instead of rambling and wasting any more of everyone’s time (I think it’s a little late for that now), I’ll just leave you with a random image I took a long time ago.  It kind of reflects my mood as of late.

Misty Morning

Until next time..

Here’s to hoping I get out of this funk…

The Mists Of…Avalon?

I’ve always been enamored with mythology, namely Greek mythology and Arthurian legend.

Recently, I went on a hike at Quoddy Head State Park.  There was a thick blanket of fog and mist rolling in from the ocean that completely obscured the view of Grand Manan.  There were several spots where the mist had parted to reveal portions of Campobello.  It reminded me of “The Mists of Avalon”.  Either that or Stephen King’s “The Mist”.  But, I’d rather there be a magical isle in the mist and not monsters, so I went with “The Mists of Avalon.”  [^_^]

Yes, I’m a nerd/geek, I know.  But I’m proud of it!

The Throne

No, I’m not going to be talking about the insanely popular book and television series “Game of Thrones”.  I’m going to talk about a rock formation that has been dubbed “The Throne.”

I’ve been hiking in Downeast Maine since I moved here a decade ago.  In all that time, I had never heard of, or seen, “The Throne” until recently.

I was searching for new geocaches in my area and came across one that was labeled “The Throne” and decided to check it out.  So, I downloaded the coordinates to my GPS and headed out to Catherine Mountain in Franklin, Maine.

After a nice hike up the side of Catherine Mountain, and several awesome views of Tunk Lake, I got to the peak and came upon the Throne in all its rock glory.

The Throne

Amazing what you can find when you get out there and look.  I actually think they could use something like this in “Game of Thrones.”

Until next time…

Fun With Photoshop…Round 2

Once again, I took a short break from taking photos and delved into the world of photo manipulation in Photoshop.

While going through my archives looking for a specific image a while ago (which I still can‘t locate, sadly), I came across a random photo I took from my front porch of a sunset last year.  I had a brief “What the…?” moment when I looked at the photo, then remembered that I took the image specifically to mess around with in Photoshop.  So I did.  This was the result.  I call it “Fire in the Sky”.  Enjoy!
