Backyard Fireworks

As everyone knows, this past Thursday was the Fourth of July.  Independence Day.  And what do people think of when they hear “Fourth of July” or “Independence Day“?  Cookouts and fireworks.

I’ve always enjoyed fireworks shows, but sadly I tend to miss out on most of them.  Previous plans, rain, and event cancellations tend to be the primary reasons.

Fireworks displays can be tricky yet awesome to photograph.  Until a few years ago, I hadn’t attended a fireworks show since high school and, until a few years ago, I had never attempted to photograph one.  The results were…let’s say…not what I had hoped for. [-_-]

This year, like most years, I was unable to travel to a publicly sponsored fireworks show, but where it is now legal for the general population to purchase and set off fireworks in Maine, I didn’t have to travel at all.  My neighbors decided to throw their own Fourth of July bash complete with their own fireworks display.  So, lucky me, I was able to watch, and photograph, a fireworks show right from my backyard.

I enjoyed the show (minus the ear-splitting explosions directly over my house), but my cats, pampered and accustomed to the quiet as they are, did not.  Poor babies.

We’ll see what happens next year.

I hope everyone had a fun and safe Independence Day!!

Until next time….

Tiger In The Grass

I have an ongoing list of things, places, people, and animals (both wild and domestic) that I want to photograph in my lifetime.  Tigers are high on that list.  Sadly, I don’t foresee myself going on any type of wildlife safari beyond my yard and local hiking spots in the near (or distant) future, so I’ll have to settle for this, more domestic, type of tiger.  [^_^]

Tiger In The Grass

I’m not sure if I’ve talked about this little stray in my blog previously, but she’s been coming around my house for a few years now.  Once we made friends, I adopted her as my official “Outdoor Cat” (she’s just as spoiled as my indoor cats! Food, toys, and all!) and have given her the name Abby (in honor of my favorite NCIS character!).  Unfortunately, I don’t have the resources to bring her inside and get her de-fleaed/de-wormed, etc. so she can become one of my house cats.  And, sadly, even if I did have the resources, I don’t think she and my current house cats would get along all that well. [-_-]  But, she seems content with our current arrangement.  She gets fed, has toys to play with, I go out and pet her every time I see her, and she can come and go as she pleases (though I always get worried when I don’t see her for a day or two).  She even knows my indoor cats’ routine, i.e. when it’s time for breakfast and supper.  She shows up on my porch at meal time and stares at the door, waiting to be fed along with my indoor cats.  And if I don’t notice her right away, she’ll knock.  I kid you not!  She’ll rub against the screen door, scratch at it, and bump her head against it hard enough that it sounds like she’s knocking on the door.  It’s a wonder she doesn’t knock herself out doing that.

As you can see in the following photo, she’s what’s called, triple pawed (she has two extra toes/claws on her front paws).

Be nice to your local strays, folks.  Try and get them some help.  Find them a loving home if you can’t give them one yourself.  And, at the risk of sounding like good old Bob Barker, do your part to help control the stray population.  Have your dog or cat spayed or neutered.

Until next time…

Sometimes It Helps To Scream…

Ever have a moment where you’re so angry, upset, or frustrated that you just want to scream as loud as humanly possible until you feel better or are completely out of breath?

Yeah, me too.

And it seems like people aren’t the only ones that employ this technique of releasing negative emotion…

Fun With Action Figures!

Those who know me, know that I’m what you call a geek, or a nerd.  I read Manga, watch anime, play video games, and collect action figures (don’t call them toys, toys are for kids [-_^]).

It used to be that it wasn’t every day you came across a geeky/nerdy girl.  Now, we’re everywhere!  Mwa ha ha ha!  Eh…I mean…Huzzah!  Geeks unite!

Anyway, it’s not something we should have to hide.  If you like something, wear it on your sleeve (unless you’re into Twilight, keep that junk secret ‘cause it’s…well…junk).  I don’t hide my geekness from the world.  Obviously where I’m writing about it!  I can usually hold my own with the boys when it comes to conversations on things ranging from comic super heroes, to anime, to Dr. Who and beyond.

Why am I telling you this?  So glad you asked!  The weather is still being disagreeable so I’ve found myself stuck inside my house much longer than I hoped to be.  To make things worse, my little rose plant has stopped offering new buds.  I think I need to replant it in a bigger pot soon.  So where does this leave me when it comes to photography?  Stranded like every buxom blonde in every horror movie ever.

I was standing in my room recently, in a daze, wondering how I could fill the photographic void until I can once again get back out into the wilderness.  That was when I looked up on my bookshelf at some of my action figures.

We stared at each other, me and my action figures, for quite a while, as if to say, “Your move, tread carefully.”  [-_^]  Just kidding.  But I found myself thinking back to when I made a post about “Storm Troopers 365”, a year long photo series done by a creative photographer that used Star Wars Storm Trooper figures and other random toys.  I figured, I could find a way to use my action figures to make a simple, and maybe funny set up for a photo.

Voilá!

Lion-O vs. Sesshomaru

Now, as much as I love you and the ThunderCats, Lion-O, I really think Sesshomaru would take this one.

So, my friends and readers, don’t be afraid to let your geek flags fly!!

Until next time…

Stuck In A Funk

I’ve been pretty slack in my artistic photography lately, mainly due to all the rain we had recently (and I hear talk of more on the way [>_<]) and a family issue.  But, like all artists in their artistic endeavors, sometimes photographers get into a funk when inspiration decides to take a vacation…without even sending a postcard.  Thanks for that, muse.  I guess I’ve fallen into that funk recently.  It’s a funk I know well.  A funk I don’t care for.  Though I do like the word “funk”.

I noticed that no one seemed interested in my little challenge last week so I won’t drive down that avenue again any time soon.  But that failed experiment won’t stop me from creating in Photoshop and sharing the results I like with folks (trust me, for every piece I share, there are ten or twenty more that never get to see the light of day).

Sadly, I have nothing new or awesome to share with you this week, my fine readers, and instead of rambling and wasting any more of everyone’s time (I think it’s a little late for that now), I’ll just leave you with a random image I took a long time ago.  It kind of reflects my mood as of late.

Misty Morning

Until next time..

Here’s to hoping I get out of this funk…
