Thanksgiving

This coming Thursday is Thanksgiving here in the US. A day when we gather with loved ones, be it family or friends or any combination thereof, and give thanks for what we have and what we’re fortunate enough to have had. I don’t know why the “giving of thanks” is only limited to one day a year. We should be thankful every day.

That being said, I would urge folks to not spoil the warm fuzzy feelings that Thanksgiving brings by going out the next day and participating in the havoc wreaking for pointless material gain called “Black Friday.” Trust me, no matter how exciting the latest gadget may seem, it’s really not worth it.

This particular Thanksgiving (and subsequently, Christmas next month) is going to be particularly difficult for me and my family as it will be our first holiday without a significant member of our little unit (those of you who follow my blog might remember me mentioning a tragedy that befell my family a few months ago…). So, folks, be extra thankful for family. You never know how much time you’ll have with them.

I wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving. And remember, the holidays aren’t about anything material, they’re about…

Hunting Season Sucks

Since we’re well into hunting season (I’m not a hunter, nor am I a supporter of sport hunting), it’s not really safe for me to go hiking at most of my favorite spots.  For some reason, hunting is allowed in my local state park and within 300 feet of the trails I hike.  So, instead of risking being shot in order to hike my favorite local trails (sometimes even wearing blaze orange from head to toe won’t help you), I’ll either have to be patient and wait out hunting season or go somewhere where hunting is prohibited.  The latter will be difficult as I mentioned.  There’s even a wildlife sanctuary where I tend to hike that allows hunting at this time of year.  How backwards is that?  Hunting in a wildlife sanctuary?  Not much of a “sanctuary” then, is it?

Anyway, to appease my readers looking for new photographs each week, I’ll leave you folks with a shot I took a while ago at Screw Auger Falls.  Enjoy.

Internet Snafu And Foliage Fail

Apologies for the lack of a blog post last Monday, folks.  I had some issues with my internet service.  [>_<]

Anyway, I went hiking a few weeks ago looking for some late blooming foliage but it seems I waited too long.  I expected the more sheltered trails (trails through deeper woods instead of along a road or the coastline) to still be vibrant.  I’m sure some were, but just not the one I chose.  Just my luck.

I went back to one of my favorites, my old stand-by, Quoddy.  Instead of hiking along the coastal trail, I chose to go through the inland trail and loop back on the coastal trail.  I was disappointed because all the trees except the pines were bare.  Though, my shots still looked “autumn-y” because of the settings I used on my camera.

Enjoy…

I See You

A while ago, I happened to look out my bedroom window and saw this strange little bug hanging out on my screen.  I zoomed in and caught him (or her) staring at me.  It was actually a little unsettling.

Fall Colors

Last week, I went on a hike to check out the fall foliage.  Driving in the car, the leaves on the trees I passed were really bright so I figured they‘d be the same on the trail.  They weren‘t.  The foliage on the trail looked like it hadn‘t even begun to change.  There were a few trees here and there that were bright, but most were still green or a drab yellow.

There were a few trees around one of the ponds that caught my eye…

Hiking to the top of the mountain (Tunk, to be exact), I not only got to admire the beautiful view, but I found the foliage I was looking for…
