Labor Day

So, today is Labor Day.  I hope everyone has a nice holiday, whatever your plans may be.  And I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating, please, if you’re going to partake of any alcohol at whatever event you plan to attend, please drink responsibly and have a designated driver.  Better yet, BE the designated driver!

 

 

I went camping this past weekend completely forgetting that it was Labor Day weekend.  The entire campground was packed to the brim but I was lucky enough to get a decent site.  While sitting in front of the fire in the evening, I decided to take a few artsy shots of the dancing flames and glowing embers.  I like photographing campfires because due to the unpredictable nature of fire, you never know how the shot will turn out each time you press the shutter button.

Snow Drift Abstract Art…Round 2

Almost two years ago to the day (strange how that worked out) , I made a post about snow drifts around my house and how they seemed like abstract art (check it out here).

 

Well, here we go again!

 

As I mentioned before, over the past few weeks, my region of the States has been hit with several major snow storms. My little corner of Maine was no acceptation. Though compared to places like Boston, we got away relatively easy.

 

Now, to set the stage for this post’s image, I should start by reminding folks that the wind around my house is a bit strange. Instead of a typical wind coming from one direction, we get winds that circle. I call them, Ninja Winds. One second they’re rushing toward you, the next they come at you from a completely different direction, catching you off guard. As a result of this, I get rather large snow drifts in my yard and driveway.

 

So what did I do? Well, before I had the snow blocking my driveway cleared, I trudged through some of it to get a few pictures.

Abstract Ice

A week or so ago, I took a hike through the trails of the nearest state park (which is a bit dangerous this time of year due to hunting season, but fear not! I had on my blaze orange!).  What interested me as I was hiking, was the fact that I came across several puddles that were frozen as well as several others in close proximity that weren’t.  It made me wonder why one puddle would freeze while another of the same size and depth relatively close by wouldn’t.  I‘m sure there‘s some fancy scientific reason for this, but damn it Jim, I‘m a photographer, not a scientist!

 

Anyway, the frozen puddles had some cool abstract designs flowing through them so I stopped and took a few pictures.

Abstract America

I wish I could say all my plans for my birthday last week worked out, but alas they didn‘t.  I did manage to have a picnic at the beach and a fire in my backyard fire pit on the day of my birthday.  But, my plans to go camping the week before my birthday were ruined since the state park I always go to when I want to go camping was closed due to the idiotic government shutdown.  On top of that, the second picnic I had planned for the day after my birthday, sadly didn’t go according to plan either.  [-_-,]

 

But, speaking of the idiotic government shutdown, and to celebrate the end of it, I thought I would post this image I took of some embers from my little birthday bonfire.  There was no manipulation involved of either the embers or the photograph.

Doesn’t the shape look a lot like the United States?  It was completely random and you all know I like random!

Snow Drift Abstract Art

Last week, New England was hit with a big snow storm.  Some areas were hit worse than others and a lot of people lost power, roads were closed, etc.  But fortunately, my area escaped relatively unscathed.  We only received about a foot of snow (if that) and heavy winds.

 

The wind around my house is a bit strange.  Instead of the usual one directional wind, we get winds that circle us.  One second you’re walking into the wind, the next it comes at you from behind and hits you like a ninja.  This kind of wind tends to make rather large snow drifts in my yard and driveway.  I decided shortly after the storm passed (and when the winds were quiet) that I would take a little walk around my house and see what the snow drifts were like.  As usual, I had my camera with me and took quite a few images of random shapes and lines left in the snow by the wind.
