When Life Hands You Lemons…

Make iced tea…..Wait….That’s not how the saying goes…..

Anyway, we all know the popular idiom and what it means.  Make the best of a bad situation or disappointment.  And recently, that’s exactly what I did.

Those of you that follow my blog know that I’m an avid hiker.  In fact, that’s where most of my photographs come from.  Hiking.  So, when I locate a new trail near where I live, I tend to be stoked.

Last week, I actually found two new trails in Lubec (home of Quoddy Head State Park).  I had driven past the road these trails were on countless times on my way to Quoddy, Bold Coast in Cutler, and Campobello island.  My mother and I tried out one of the trails last Saturday.  The Morong Cove Trail.  Aside from a few downed branches across the trail in spots and several poorly marked portions we had to navigate using my Native American wilderness intuition (long story), it was a decent trail.  I can’t say the same for the second trail.

On Tuesday, April 2nd, my mother and I geared up and set out to hike the six miles that make up the Horan Head trail in Lubec.  Sadly, we were disappointed.  It was obvious from the start that this trail is neglected.  There were so many trees down across the trail, not just branches, that it was difficult to traverse.  And the markings?  Even worse.  What sparse markings there were, were difficult to see.  Who uses white paint on a birch tree as a trail marker!?  Seriously!?  Anyway, about one mile into the trail, we called it quits.  When one of us has a bad gut feeling about a trail, we turn back (this is a good practice, or rule, when hiking folks.  Rule number one: NEVER hike alone.  Rule two: Be prepared for anything.  And Rule three: If something feels off or wrong, don’t continue down the trail.  Go back).

We were both disappointed at the condition of this trail.  It made us start thinking about forming some kind of group to volunteer to perform maintenance on trails like this.  Sadly, we have few friends, and don’t know many people with four wheelers and the ability to safely operate a chainsaw that would be willing to help us out.

So, to soothe the sting of this disappointment, we headed to our trusted hiking stand-by, Quoddy.  I know I talk about Quoddy all the time and my readers are probably rolling their eyes and saying to their computer screens “Talk about something else!”.  I apologize.  It’s just such a nice place, I want to publicize it so more folks can visit and enjoy its beauty as I do.

So disappointment turned into a decent day in spite of the biting cold (isn’t winter supposed to be over!?).  I’m wishing for better luck on the next new trail I discover.

Until next time…

Random Awesomeness

My sincere apologies to you, my dear readers.  I haven’t been on the ball lately when it comes to taking awesome images or putting together engaging posts to share with you.  My bad.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a new, recently shot image to share with you this week either.  It’s been bitterly cold in my neck of the woods the past week and that made it a little difficult for me to get outside and take some photos in the wilderness as I like to do.  But, that’s not to say that I don’t have anything to share with you at all.

A few weeks ago (last year actually), I had mentioned to everyone that I had found a new network of trails not far from my favorite place, Quoddy Head State Park.  The trails I found were in a little land preserve called Pike Lands.  While exploring these trails, I came across a random yet incredibly interestingly shaped tree.  All the branches were curling around the tree.  It was odd, yet awesome.

Fall Foliage…WIN…[^_^]…

A few weeks ago, as I mentioned, I had hoped to get a nice photograph of the fall foliage to share with you folks.  At that time…I failed.  Well, the foliage around my house failed.

But rejoice!  I have finally succeeded as I hoped I would!

While on a hike up Tunk Mountain, I managed to catch a few images of some totally unexpected, nice, and bright foliage.  It was quite surprising because at the head of the trail, all the trees were either bare or the foliage had already gone past.  I suppose the shelter from the wind created by the surrounding forest coupled with the cool nights and nice days we’ve had here in Maine this past month, left the trees in this area with some decent foliage.  Woot!

So, to make up for my lack of a foliage photo when I said I’d give you folks a foliage photo, here are two.  Enjoy!

When Awesome Things Happen

I love it when awesome things happen.  Let me set the scene for you, folks.

Yesterday, (Sunday, March 18 for those of you not following along) I went on a little trip to Quoddy Head State Park (in Lubec Maine) with my parents for a day of hiking and photography.  Two of my favorite things.

In the middle of this hike, my parents and I took a moment to sit on some rocks by the ocean.  The tide was just starting to come in, and the surf was a bit choppy, so there were waves crashing and water spraying left and right.  Now, usually when I try to photograph crashing waves I watch a few awesome spectacles then when I lift my camera, what happens?  The water calms and no waves form.  Then, when I put my camera down, things start up again.  This is where infinite patients comes into play.

But yesterday, either the stars aligned or Poseidon was working with me, whatever the case was, I didn’t have to wait long for an interesting display to kick up.  I saw a massive wave heading toward some rock formations, and mind you, I was rather close to the shoreline, but instead of backing down, I lifted my camera.

This, my friends, was the shot I took away.

Now, after another mile or so of hiking, my parents and I took another break on a rock outcropping.  Again, by some miracle, I looked up at just the right moment and saw one of our country’s most majestic creatures.  A bald eagle.  A bald freaking eagle, folks!  I don’t know about you, but I get excited when I see a bald eagle in the wild.  I’ve managed to catch a picture of one a year or two ago, but I still get that feeling of utter awe when I spot a bald eagle soaring in the air.  And yes, I managed to get a picture of it, but unfortunately, it was as the eagle was flying away from me and I doubt said eagle would appreciate having its backside posted on the internet!  Regardless, it was awesome to see an eagle.  Did I mention it was awesome?  I did?! Ok!

I just love it when awesome things happen.

Until next time…

Wildlife Sightings Are Awesome!!

The biggest April Fools joke that was played on me today came from Mother Nature.  After spring had taken the stage, winter decided to come back for an encore.  Here in Downeast Maine, we had no snow on the ground yesterday and today, we have about a foot.  So, while everyone else out there is pelting you fine folks with April Fools jokes and pranks (Mother Nature included in some areas of the country), I’ve decided to be nice and update you on my most recent wildlife encounters!

This past Wednesday (March 30, 2011 for those of you not following closely) I went on a nice hike with my parents in Milbridge Maine.  We went to the Petit Manan Wildlife Refuge to be exact.  Now, usually, when it’s just me and my mother hiking this particular trail, we spot animal tracks but never any animals beyond small birds.  My father must be our wildlife good luck charm because this was the first time he hiked this trail with us and we had two awesome encounters with wildlife.

First, halfway through our hike, we were at a portion of the trail that runs along the water.  Just a few yards away is a small island, and I mean small.  While looking around and basking in the relatively nice weather, we spotted a rather large bird taking off from the tree tops on the little island.  While watching the bird we came to realize that it was a Bald Eagle.  I, personally, had never seen one that close before.  As I was busy taking a photo of the eagle, I heard my mother say “There’s another one!”  And when I looked up, there was indeed a second eagle taking off.  Putting two and two together, we concluded that there had to be a nest somewhere in the trees.  Smart, huh?  [^_^]

Now, for those of you that don’t know, my father was really the one that got me interested in photography in the first place.  So when we go out on these little hikes/walks/day trips we take photos together.  However, more often than not, these little photo outings of ours tend to turn into competitions as to who got the better shot.  It’s all in good fun (though I tend to win!  My father blames it on me having the better camera.  [^_^]).

So, my father and I both took several photos of the eagles as they flew back and forth from their nest on the island to wherever they were going to find food.  I didn’t see his photos on the computer screen but the shots he took looked pretty decent on his camera’s screen.  Mine came out decent as well, though I know I could have done better.  You can see one of my photos here.

Now, the Bald Eagle sighting was awesome.  I was still stoked from the sighting as we headed back down the trail toward the parking lot.  While walking along, I heard something rustling in the brush off to my left.  I stopped and looked expecting to see a deer or perhaps a raccoon running off, but instead I saw something climbing a tree that gave me a little moment of shock.  At first, I thought it was a bear cub, and as everyone knows, where there’s a baby, there’s usually a mom close behind.  But after the split second of mistaken identity, I realized I was watching a chubby porcupine waddle up the tree.

I’ve seen porcupines waddling across the road or traipsing through my yard in the evenings but I had never seen one in bright daylight climbing a tree like that.  It even stopped half way up the tree and looked at us.  Again, my father and I started our little “I-can-get-the-better-shot” competition.  And again, I didn’t see his shots on the computer screen so I can’t attest to how well he did.  Come to think of it, I didn’t see any of his shots of the porcupine at all.  Hmm.

You can see my photograph of the porcupine here.

The day didn’t end there.  Before heading home for the day, my parents and I went to the beach.  Though it was cool, it was nice.  My mother and I went hunting for beach glass while my father wandered off and tried his hand at digging up a clam or two.  Just before we were getting ready to leave, I knelt down, dug with my bare hand, and brought up two clams that made the six my father found look like infants.  Yeah, I’m awesome.  Unfortunately, I didn’t think to take photos of the clams I found compared to his so you’ll just have to take my word on this one! [-_^]

I hope everyone’s having a fun and safe April Fools Day.  Hopefully no one has suffered any mental or physical injury from any bad pranks.

Until next time folks…

Keep on rockin’ on.
