Abstract Ice

A week or so ago, I took a hike through the trails of the nearest state park (which is a bit dangerous this time of year due to hunting season, but fear not! I had on my blaze orange!).  What interested me as I was hiking, was the fact that I came across several puddles that were frozen as well as several others in close proximity that weren’t.  It made me wonder why one puddle would freeze while another of the same size and depth relatively close by wouldn’t.  I‘m sure there‘s some fancy scientific reason for this, but damn it Jim, I‘m a photographer, not a scientist!

Anyway, the frozen puddles had some cool abstract designs flowing through them so I stopped and took a few pictures.

First Day of December

Thanksgiving has come and gone and Christmas is right around the corner.  That’s right, it’s the first day of December already.  How time flies, huh?  It seems like yesterday when we were ringing in the new year that was 2014.  Now, we’re getting ready to say goodbye to 2014 and hello to 2015.

I hope everyone had a safe, fun, and happy Thanksgiving.  And, if you’re reading this, congratulations on surviving that whole Black Friday thing.  I hope that if you ventured out to brave the insane crowds, you made it through unscathed.  And, in the same vein, I hope you left everyone in your wake unscathed.

I don’t buy into the whole Black Friday thing, personally.  I’m a savvy shopper year round, so I have no need to wake up before dawn, stand in long lines (I got enough of that in grade school, thank you very much), and fight crowds of mostly rude and greedy people all for some material goods that will most likely never be used, or, in the case of technology, be obsolete in less than a year.

No.  Instead, I sleep in on Black Friday (and Cyber Monday too) and, if the weather is relatively nice, I go hiking.  With a majority of people crowding the stores, hiking trails are nearly deserted this time of year.  Just how I like them.

This past weekend, I ventured to one of my favorite places.  You know the one.  Yep, that’s right, Quoddy Head State Park.  Now, before I left on my little adventure, I loaded my snowshoes into the car because I always like to be prepared.  I figured, with the amount of snow around my house, I’d probably need my snowshoes for the hike.

I was wrong.

The closer I got to Quoddy, the less snow there was.  The trees were bare, unlike those at home.  The roads were clear and totally dry, unlike those at home.  And I could still see the bare ground, unlike at home.  So, my snowshoes stayed warm in my car as I ventured out for my hike at Quoddy.

Dreamy Quoddy Trail(And yes, if you couldn’t tell, I did some editing on this photo to give it a more “dreamy” quality. [-_^])

I challenge you, yes you reading this, to try something different next year.  Instead of following the masses to the stores on Black Friday, get outside (weather permitting of course) and spend some time connecting with nature.  It’s a good stress reliever.

Until next time…

New Trail…Fail…Again…

This past weekend, there was finally some decent weather. No rain and not too humid. So, I decided to get out and try to locate another new trail I read about.

I found the road but unfortunately couldn’t access the trail itself because the access road was so overgrown with brush and downed trees.

Fail.

So, as a backup, I decided to head over to the Hamilton Cove Preserve to check out the Benny’s Mountain trail I hadn’t hiked the last time I was there.

Fail number two as that trail was also overgrown so much it was completely impassable.

On to my second backup and trusted standby of Quoddy Head State Park. There I managed to salvage the day with a decent hike (hiking is always decent there) and some pictures of several interesting rock stacks out at Green Point.

Transformer Rock Face

Now, is it just me, or does this kind of look like the face of a Transformer? [o_O]

If at first you don’t succeed, try again. Hell, try as many times as you need to!

Until next time….

New Trail…Meh…

This past week I hiked yet another new trail.   I have mixed reactions about this one.

It was called the Ridge Trail in the Bog Brook Cove Preserve along the Cutler coast.  An 1100ft handicapped accessible “trail” takes you from the parking lot out to a little ocean overlook (there’s also a small trail from this point that can take you down to the beach which was awesome).

Off to the left, before reaching the beach was the Ridge Trail.  The trail splits in two directions to either take you up a small ridge (hence the name “Ridge Trail”), or around the base if you’re not feeling a climb.  I went up the ridge and the views were pretty awesome.  Definitely worth the climb in my opinion.

Ridge View Panorama

After descending the other side of the ridge, I decided to check out the remainder of the trail (which was a little over two miles round trip).  That’s where I started to dislike the hike.

It was another hot day, though by the water and on top of the ridge there was a nice cool breeze, but further along the trail, into the woods, the breeze disappeared and the horseflies and mosquitoes took its place.  Plus, there were several downed trees across the trail that I had to try and climb over/under in order to continue.  At one point, there were several trees down in a row and I said “screw it” and turned back.

I headed back to the beach and luckily the tide was on its way out so I was able to climb out on some rocks and have lunch.  While in the midst of my lunch, I noticed something odd in the trees.  It looked like a chimney but there was no house.  After I was done my lunch, I went to investigate and found that it was indeed a chimney (probably the reason they call the second trail in this spot the “Chimney Trail”).

Old Chimney

I’m definitely putting these trails on my list of places to go back to in the fall when it starts to cool off and the bugs take a hike (so to speak).  I think I’ll like it a lot better if the air is cooler and I can move five feet without twenty mosquitoes biting me in spite of all the bug spray I wear.

Until next time….

New Trail….Fail…

Where last time I won where trails were concerned, this week I failed.  I’m not sure if I can blame it on the trail or if I should blame it on the day/circumstances.

Recently, I checked out another new trail (again, one I’ve driven right past for several years and never knew it existed).  This time it was the Norse Pond trail between Cutler and Whiting.

First of all, it was an extremely hot and humid day.  Strike one.

Second, there were several people on the trail behind me.  Strike two.  (I always feel like I’m being pushed down a trail when there’s someone behind me)

And third, the black flies were relentless even though I nearly drown myself in bug repellant (the strong DEET stuff, too).  Strike three.

For as sucky as the experience was, I won’t write the trail off completely just yet.  I’ll wait a while though, put it in the archives, and try it again later on in the fall when it’s cooler, the bugs are less prevalent, and the kids are back in school.  Who knows? On a better day, under better circumstances, I might actually like the trail.  It did have a nice little patch of beach after all.

I did happen to see some HUGE prints in the mud which I can only assume were from a moose.  I’m talking HUGE!

Here’s to hoping the next new trail I explore will yield better results!

Until next time…
