Hey There, Huge Spider…[o_O]…

First of all, it’s my brother’s birthday today so let me take a moment to say, Happy Birthday Don!!

Now, those who suffer from arachnophobia probably won’t want to read this post or scroll down to the included image.  But those of you who don’t mind spiders, or think they’re awesome, read on!

This past Friday (August 24th for those keeping track) while I was looking for a cat toy in my back yard (long story), I came across the biggest, hairiest, most colorful, and creepiest spider I had ever seen in my life.

This thing was huge.  Probably an inch and a half to two inches in size, not including the span of its legs!  And, of course, it was building its web right on the side of my house between the shingles and the lattice we have along the foundation (which made weed whacking yesterday very interesting).

I just happened to look up and there it was, inches from my face.  Now, I’m not arachnophobic (I’m not in love with the things either) but seeing that thing so close to my face was quite an unpleasant surprise.  I could have smacked it away from me.  I could have squished the daylights out of it.  But no.  What did I do?  Like a true lover of nature and a true photographer, I ran inside, grabbed my camera, and returned to take a picture of it.

I had never seen this type of spider before, so once I was safely back inside (and after I checked myself over to make sure the thing didn’t hitch a ride on my pant leg!), I searched online for what type of arachnid it was.

With my awesome detective skills, and confirmation from my spider loving friend, Sarah, I found out that it’s a Black and Yellow Argiope, better known as a St. Andrews Cross spider.

*Warning*  Again, if you suffer from arachnophobia, or if you’re prone to nightmares, scroll NO further!

BEHOLD!

Weird and creepy huh!?  See?  Again, tying into last week’s post, sometimes you find some really interesting things to photograph right in your own backyard!

Until next time…That is, if the spider doesn’t eat my face first…

Waking Up Early Has Its Advantages

I don’t normally give in to my cats when they try to get me up at four in the morning to feed them, but recently, a little voice in the back of my head said “Get up, now.”  So, I did.  And I was rewarded.

Not only were my cats happy that they were getting fed when they demanded it, but as I was cleaning my hands (canned cat food stinks to high heaven as I‘m sure some of you know!), I just happened to look out my kitchen window.  At first, I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary.  Probably because I was still half asleep.  But movement soon caught my eye.  Walking toward my yard from the empty lot across the dirt road from my house, was a young deer.

I’m not ashamed to admit, I literally almost squealed like a giddy schoolgirl!  Usually, when I spot a deer in my yard it’s late at night after the sun has long set, not early in the morning when the sun is already up.

Needless to say, I grabbed my camera and snapped a few shots.  Now, taking photos through a window doesn’t really lend well to a sharp, clean image.  Especially if that window has a screen on it.  But I was so happy to see this little deer wander into my yard in daylight that I could care less about the window’s screen!

Here are the results!

So cute!!

Until next time…

Spring Has Sprung…

I usually mark spring’s arrival not by the calendar but by when flowers start to bloom, butterflies start flitting around, and when my lawn needs to be mowed for the first time in the year.

Flowers in bloom….Check.

Lawn needs to be mowed….Check.

Butterflies flitting around….Check.

Spring has sprung, my friends.  Get outside and enjoy!

Until next time…

When Awesome Things Happen

I love it when awesome things happen.  Let me set the scene for you, folks.

Yesterday, (Sunday, March 18 for those of you not following along) I went on a little trip to Quoddy Head State Park (in Lubec Maine) with my parents for a day of hiking and photography.  Two of my favorite things.

In the middle of this hike, my parents and I took a moment to sit on some rocks by the ocean.  The tide was just starting to come in, and the surf was a bit choppy, so there were waves crashing and water spraying left and right.  Now, usually when I try to photograph crashing waves I watch a few awesome spectacles then when I lift my camera, what happens?  The water calms and no waves form.  Then, when I put my camera down, things start up again.  This is where infinite patients comes into play.

But yesterday, either the stars aligned or Poseidon was working with me, whatever the case was, I didn’t have to wait long for an interesting display to kick up.  I saw a massive wave heading toward some rock formations, and mind you, I was rather close to the shoreline, but instead of backing down, I lifted my camera.

This, my friends, was the shot I took away.

Now, after another mile or so of hiking, my parents and I took another break on a rock outcropping.  Again, by some miracle, I looked up at just the right moment and saw one of our country’s most majestic creatures.  A bald eagle.  A bald freaking eagle, folks!  I don’t know about you, but I get excited when I see a bald eagle in the wild.  I’ve managed to catch a picture of one a year or two ago, but I still get that feeling of utter awe when I spot a bald eagle soaring in the air.  And yes, I managed to get a picture of it, but unfortunately, it was as the eagle was flying away from me and I doubt said eagle would appreciate having its backside posted on the internet!  Regardless, it was awesome to see an eagle.  Did I mention it was awesome?  I did?! Ok!

I just love it when awesome things happen.

Until next time…

Bet You Never Expected To Find This At Home Depot!

Most people walk into Home Depot looking for things like tools, lumber, gardening supplies, and bathroom or kitchen fixtures.  They don’t walk into Home Depot looking for a duck.  That’s right.  I said duck.

Yet that’s exactly what I did.

This past Wednesday (June 1st) I sat down at 6pm to watch the local evening news.  Amidst all the stories of the devastation caused by tornadoes in the South (and one in Massachusetts), car accidents, arrests, etc. there was one story that caught my attention.

The Hope Depot Duck.

It seemed as though a female duck wandered into the Home Depot in Bangor, Maine (for the second year in a row) and set up shop right smack in the middle of the store’s Garden Center.  She picked a nice spot on a waist high shelf among some potted flowers, built herself a nice cozy little nest, and laid her eggs.

The Bangor news crew interviewed one of the women that worked in the Garden Center and she said that not only was this was the second time the duck has done this, but she didn’t seem bothered by the noise of the cars outside, the equipment, or the people inside the store.  She just went about her business like nothing was out of the ordinary.

Employees in the store have made signs asking customers not to disturb their resident duck and even went as far as to run yellow caution tape around the area the duck is residing in.

Now, even though I saw this story on the news and saw the video recorded from the scene, I had to see it for myself.  So, the following day, my mother and I hopped into the car and drove the 90 miles from our house to Bangor.  90 miles just to see a duck in the Home Depot Garden Center.

What?  People have traveled greater distances for stranger reasons!

Upon arriving at Home Depot I went straight to the Garden Center.  After all, I was there to see the duck not shop for lumber!

I rounded a corner and spotted the yellow tape that marked the duck’s nesting area.  And true to the news report, it was smack in the middle of the Garden Center.  At first I couldn’t see the duck because she had piled so much hay around herself to make her nest but then I saw her move and I couldn’t believe it.  There was actually a duck nesting in the Garden Center.  Not only that but like the news report said, she actually didn’t seem bothered by anyone or anything around her.  She was just going about her daily business, fluffing the nest, checking on her eggs, and doing what ducks normally do when they‘re nesting.

Of course I had my camera with me (what good photographer doesn‘t?!).  I just couldn’t pass up an opportunity like this.  I clicked off a few frames (you can see one here, and another here) before my actions drew the attention of  a few other people who didn’t know anything about the duck and had come there to actually shop.  I even had a woman run up beside me and ask what was going on before she noticed the duck on her own and immediately pulled out her cell phone to snap a few pictures saying “Oh my God, that‘s so cute!”.

It may have been a long trip for something some may deem trivial, but to me, it was worth it.

It just goes to show you that there can be peace and tranquility, new life in the midst of chaos, whether it be in the world or in the Garden Center of your local Home Depot.

Until next time.

Keep your eyes open, folks.  You never know what you may find!
