Doe…A Deer…A Female Deer…

Every time I least expect it, I look out my kitchen window and see anywhere from one to four deer in my front yard. As far as I’ve been able to tell, there are three mother deer with five babies between them (well, they’re no longer babies as their spots are gone). I try to take as many pictures as I can when I notice them, but sadly (sadly for me, good for them) I see less of them during hunting season.

I noticed this doe because of one of my cats. She (my cat) was staring out the window and when I went to look, there was a deer in my yard. I’m not sure which family group this one belongs to or if she was just a loner that wandered into my yard. It would help if they wore name tags so I could identify them. [-_^]

It’s funny that I see more deer in my yard than I do when I’m out on a hiking trail.

Until next time…

Roque Bluffs Wildlife Sighting

Typically, when I go for a hike, my wildlife sightings tend to be limited to birds, squirrels, chipmunks, snakes, and seal (when I‘m hiking a coastal trail that is). It’s quite rare that I see anything else. I still treasure the time I spotted a wild bunny on Campobello (I spotted two more on a bike ride a while ago so that was cool).

Well, on a recent hike at Roque Bluffs State Park, I spotted something I hardly ever seen on the trail.

I was moving right along, my mind in my own little world, and I came around a bend through some trees and saw this gal…

She was just standing there. I expected her to bolt when she saw me. Nope. I told myself “She’ll take off the minute you go for your camera.” But, again, nope. She stayed right there, staring at me, and let me get a few pictures.

I love wildlife sightings.

Deer In The Yard…Again

One morning recently, as I got ready to make myself some breakfast before heading out for a hike, I looked out my kitchen window and saw a four-legged visitor hanging out in my yard. I’m pretty sure this deer is female as she’s visited my yard many times over the years and has even come around with little ones.

Today I saw her not just grazing in my yard like she normally does, but she was lying down in some tall grass on the border of my property. I was even able to step out onto my porch without spooking her in order to get these images. If you look closely, you can even see her cheek puffed out a bit due to the mouthful of grass she’s chomping on.

It’s nice to see these beautiful creatures enjoying my yard. Apparently the grass is greener over here!

Deer In The Yard

As I mentioned last week, the only time I tend to see deer is not while I’m out hiking (which you’d think would be more likely) but when they come into my yard.

Apparently the grass and clover that makes up my lawn is pretty good.

Wildlife And Nature

On my most recent hiking outing I decided to hike a trail in Gouldsboro hoping that the lotus blossoms were blooming. I had no luck there. But in the middle of the road to the trail, right by the pond where the lotus blossoms live stood a deer. I noticed the mother first, then a little blur of movement on the side of the road caught my attention. A spotted faun ran to catch up to its mother. I shot a little video of them dancing down the road to a dirt road that leads to a small art studio/gallery. Once level with the dirt road, I managed to get a nice picture of them both (again, I was the passenger for all this).

Mother and Baby Deer

So cute!

Onward to the hike. It was a really warm day and without the breeze it would have been unbearable, but I trudged along the trail to its end, then started back. On the way back, my hiking partner noticed a small single pink flower on the edge of the trail. A Lady Slipper if we’re not mistaken. I’ve never actually seen a Lady Slipper up close like that and from what I’ve heard they were, or still are, an endangered plant. I’ll have to do a little research on that to find out what’s what.

Lady Slipper
It’s a pretty little flower, and I’m not a fan of the color pink!

It concerned me how close the little flower was to the edge of the trail. I’d almost stepped on it myself so someone not really paying attention or someone with a dog running rampant could easily trample it. I hope that doesn’t happen.
Keep your eyes peeled when you’re out an about, folks.
