Wildlife And Nature

On my most recent hiking outing I decided to hike a trail in Gouldsboro hoping that the lotus blossoms were blooming. I had no luck there. But in the middle of the road to the trail, right by the pond where the lotus blossoms live stood a deer. I noticed the mother first, then a little blur of movement on the side of the road caught my attention. A spotted faun ran to catch up to its mother. I shot a little video of them dancing down the road to a dirt road that leads to a small art studio/gallery. Once level with the dirt road, I managed to get a nice picture of them both (again, I was the passenger for all this).

So cute!

Onward to the hike. It was a really warm day and without the breeze it would have been unbearable, but I trudged along the trail to its end, then started back. On the way back, my hiking partner noticed a small single pink flower on the edge of the trail. A Lady Slipper if we’re not mistaken. I’ve never actually seen a Lady Slipper up close like that and from what I’ve heard they were, or still are, an endangered plant. I’ll have to do a little research on that to find out what’s what.

Lady Slipper
It’s a pretty little flower, and I’m not a fan of the color pink!

It concerned me how close the little flower was to the edge of the trail. I’d almost stepped on it myself so someone not really paying attention or someone with a dog running rampant could easily trample it. I hope that doesn’t happen.
Keep your eyes peeled when you’re out an about, folks.

And on a side note, time is running out fast for the 8X10 print giveaway, open to my blog followers/email subscribers. You have until 11pm on June 30 to send me an email with the subject “8X10 Print Giveaway” to enter. I’ll announce the winner of the drawing on Monday, July 4th! Don’t miss out! Should I Be Concerned?!

Sometimes when I’m on a hike I come across something strange, something out-of-place, something that makes me concerned.

Again, on a hike at Quoddy Head State Park, I spotted something down on the beach that gave me pause (<– a little writer’s prose for you there).

Half a Canoe

What am I supposed to make of this? Should I be concerned? Where’s the other half of the canoe?! Was there someone in the canoe when the other half went missing? If so, where are they?!

Strange…

Until next time…

Faerie Land!

Every once in a while, when I’m on a hike or just out and about somewhere, I come across a spot or scene that has a bit of an otherworldly or mystical feel to it.  For me, being in the forest is a spiritual experience on its own, but sometimes there’s just a little extra…something.

For example, recently I was out hiking the trails of Roque Bluffs near where I live.  The wild apple trees along the trail were in full bloom and there were so many bees enjoying the blossoms that their buzzing was all you could here.  And they all sounded in sync, like it was just one massive bee in each tree I approached.

The blossoms were pretty enough but what added to the beauty and made the scene a bit more mystical were all the fallen petals strewn along the trail.  It looked like something out of a fantasy movie like I was walking into a land of faeries (yes, I believe in faeries, don’t judge me!).

Clap your hands if you believe!

What In Hyrule…!?

By now my more frequent readers know well that I’m a nerd/geek/intellectual badass, call it what you will. I’m an avid reader, gamer, and collector of nerdy stuff like action figures. And, by now, my readers know that I like to take some figures along with me when I hike and insert them into scenes around me which I then photograph (as evidenced by my images of Martin McGnome and his family).

Well, I have a new character that I’ve added to my action figure arsenal. I’m sure some of you out there who are into video games will recognize him.

He’s the Hero of Hyrule. The Hero of Time. I’m talking, of course, about Link from the Legend of Zelda!

I recently took Link on a trip to my go-to hiking spot, Quoddy Head State Park. About a half a mile down the coastal trail (it feels much farther when you hike it though) is a spot I’ve talked about and photographed countless times called Green Point. The day I went, Green Point was covered in cool rock stacks, Cairns as they’re known in the hiking circle (it’s a cool circle, you should join it if you’re not already a member!).

While photographing some of the rock stacks on their own, I saw a super cool shot forming in my head. Then, while my hiking partner (my mother) went off to check something out a few yards away, I got to work setting up the shot with Link.

Voila! It looks like something straight out of a Legend of Zelda game! At least, it does to me!

What in Hyrule...?

You can almost hear what Link’s thinking (as he’s mute in the games, but if you‘re a gamer you already knew that) as he looks out over the landscape he needs to traverse on whatever quest was laid out before him…
“What in Hyrule…?” Sorta like an “Oh crap, I have to cross this!?”

See? Told ya I’m a nerd. [^_^]

Anyway, expect to see more from Link. He’s already making himself at home in my action figure arsenal.

Until next time…
