Stuck In A Rut

I don’t know about any of you, my dear readers, but every now and then, I find myself stuck in a rut. Mostly it’s creativity related, but sometimes I look at my surroundings and think, “I need to change this s#!t around.” And by that I don’t mean getting out of the house for a “change of scenery,“ I mean, physically rearrange the furniture kind of change. So, recently, that’s what I did. I completely rearranged my space. And because I got into this mode (it actually took me several days to even figure out a new layout that would actually work), I didn’t really spend much time on my photography, or my writing. My writing has been suffering long before I got into this little “have to change my space” rut, but that’s a whole other headache of a story for never.

Anyway, I apologize that I don’t have any story or words of wisdom to share with you folks this week, but here’s a picture from my archives for you to enjoy… So… Enjoy!

“Whatcha Doin’?”

I’m sure those of you out there who have pets (namely cats) have experienced at one point, your pet getting in the middle of an activity or important task you’re trying to take care of, searching for attention.

Well, one of my cats feels that I shouldn’t be writing without her presence.  She comes into the room, and if I’m sitting too close to my desk for her to hop up into my lap (which is most of the time), she’ll jump up onto my desk and get between me and my laptop.  She knows she’s not supposed to do that, but she does anyway, to get my attention and let me know I need to pay attention to her.

So, I push my chair back, let her get into my lap and when she’s bored with that (more accurately, I think she feels that I don’t give her the amount of attention she wants and she just gets annoyed), she climbs onto the arm of my chair then up onto the back where she perches and looks over my shoulder.

Now, I wear headphones to listen to music while I write and when my cat does this, I can hear her purring in my ear over the music, that’s how close to my head she sits.

Sometimes, when she stares over my shoulder, she sits there so long that I start to wonder if she’s actually reading what I’m writing.

Proof.

I wish she would give me a neck massage while she’s back there.

Anyway, I feel kind of guilty when she wants my attention (even though a good third of my daily attention is devoted to her already) while I’m busy writing and I only stop to pet her for a few moments before going back to writing.  So, I try to time it now so I sit down to write when she’s off napping.

What tasks do your pets get involved in, or try to distract you from?

Until next time…

Cabin Fever

We’ve all heard the term, know what it means, and have most likely experienced it at one time or another.  Isn’t there also a movie with that title?

Anyway, with the weather in my little piece of Maine so far this winter, I haven’t been able to get out as much as I would have liked to do some photography.  The snow seems to have it out for us, the temperature can’t seem to climb above 30, and the wind keeps raging.  (The passing of my beloved cat back in January only made things worse.)

Because of this, all I’ve managed to photograph in the past two months are birds in my front yard and my three cats in my house.  But, even though I’d like to get outside, get some fresh air, and take some photographs, I’ve been lucky enough to stave off the severe onset of cabin fever.  How am I doing that?  Simple.  Writing.  Writing and working a few orders for some handmade awesomeness.

So, don’t expect to see too much in the way of photography in my blog posts for a while.  At least not until the weather decides to start playing nice.

Until next time…

An Idle Mind…

…is a grieving person’s worst enemy. So, I’ve been bombarding myself with projects too keep busy. Reading, making jewelry, painting, and writing.

The few of you who follow this little blog of mine will know that I was in the process of writing and editing my first novel last year. Well, I finished that. It’s ready to be handed off to my first reader and editor. I hope to do that sometime next month.

Earlier this month, before I lost my beloved cat, I started writing my next novel, the second book in what I plan to make a trilogy. Granted I set it aside for a while, unable to bring myself to work on it (or even look at it really) after my cat passed. But I forced myself to get back in the swing of things.

I can’t (and really won’t ever) say I’m “moving on” from my cat’s passing, but I am coping.

And for those of you who follow my blog for the photography and care little for my other artistic ventures, I haven’t forgotten about you. I’ll try to get back to posting about my photography next week, or the week after.

Until next time…

I Fail…

…at sticking to self imposed schedules.

It was my idea/goal to have my final edit of my novel done by the start of May.  I had all of April to work on it.  But did I?  Yes and no.  Mostly no.  I printed out the prologue and the first fifteen chapters.  I edited the prologue and the first chapter.  Wow.

So, here it is, already the fifth of May (Happy Cinco de Mayo to those who celebrate it!), and I’m way behind.  I had hoped to get my editing done so I could hand my novel off to my friend/former college professor/editor for his notes.  Looks like that won’t happen before the university’s semester ends and he takes off for whatever adventures he has planned for the summer.  And, unless I can pull a miracle out of nowhere by finishing this in a week, and catching him before the college semester ends, there goes a whole summer.  I’ll try to pull off this miracle, but it’s…as they say in England…Not bloody likely!!

So, I’ll just have to bite the bullet on failing to obtain my goal, finish my editing, set this novel aside until the university’s fall semester starts up, and just dive into the next book in what I hope will be a trilogy at least.

Wish me luck, folks, I need it!

Until next time…
